Following its successful delivery, the Guyana Defense Force’s (GDF) newest asset, the GDFS Berbice, is currently undergoing rigorous sea trials off the coast of Guyana. Metal Shark, the Louisiana-based boat builder, has collaborated closely with the GDF to ensure the vessel meets the highest standards of operational readiness and performance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The sea trials mark a critical phase in the integration of the GDFS Berbice into the GDF Coast Guard fleet. During these trials, the vessel’s capabilities will be put to the test, evaluating its performance in various sea conditions and validating its readiness for active duty. This comprehensive assessment includes testing the vessel’s speed, maneuverability, communication systems, navigation equipment, and other key operational features.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The 115-foot patrol vessel, named after the Berbice River in Guyana, is a versatile platform designed to conduct maritime law enforcement patrols, border security operations, customs enforcement, counter-narcotics missions, fisheries protection, disaster relief efforts, and search and rescue operations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
With a crew of 24, the GDFS Berbice boasts a range of 2,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots, providing extended endurance for long-range missions. The vessel is propelled by twin 1,600 BHP CAT C32 diesel inboard engines, demonstrating impressive speed capabilities with a top speed exceeding 20 knots.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The vessel’s sea trials represent the collaborative efforts of Metal Shark and the GDF to ensure the GDFS Berbice is tailored to the specific operational requirements of Guyana’s maritime security needs.
