GDFS Berbice Embarks on Sea Trials
Arrival of New Patrol Vessel Marks Advancements in Maritime Security
Following its successful delivery, the Guyana Defense Force’s (GDF) newest asset, the GDFS Berbice, is currently undergoing rigorous sea trials off the coast of Guyana. Metal Shark, the Louisiana-based boat builder, has collaborated closely with the GDF to ensure the vessel meets the highest standards of operational readiness and performance.
The sea trials mark a critical phase in the integration of the GDFS Berbice into the GDF Coast Guard fleet. During these trials, the vessel’s capabilities will be put to the test, evaluating its performance in various sea conditions and validating its readiness for active duty. This comprehensive assessment includes testing the vessel’s speed, maneuverability, communication systems, navigation equipment, and other key operational features.
“The sea trials are a crucial step in ensuring that the GDFS Berbice is fully equipped to handle the diverse range of missions it has been designed for,” stated Metal Shark’s Vice President of International Business Development, Henry Irizarry. “We are confident that the vessel’s cutting-edge design and advanced technology will exceed expectations.”
The 115-foot patrol vessel, named after the Berbice River in Guyana, is a versatile platform designed to conduct maritime law enforcement patrols, border security operations, customs enforcement, counter-narcotics missions, fisheries protection, disaster relief efforts, and search and rescue operations.
With a crew of 24, the GDFS Berbice boasts a range of 2,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots, providing extended endurance for long-range missions. The vessel is propelled by twin 1,600 BHP CAT C32 diesel inboard engines, demonstrating impressive speed capabilities with a top speed exceeding 20 knots.
The vessel’s sea trials represent the collaborative efforts of Metal Shark and the GDF to ensure the GDFS Berbice is tailored to the specific operational requirements of Guyana’s maritime security needs. The trials also provide an opportunity for the crew to familiarize themselves with the vessel’s advanced features and systems.
As Metal Shark CEO Chris Allard remarked, “The sea trials signify a crucial phase in delivering a custom-tailored solution that will serve the Guyana Defense Force for years to come. We are committed to providing a vessel that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of our strategic partners.”
Upon successful completion of the sea trials, the GDFS Berbice will be officially commissioned into service, enhancing Guyana’s maritime capabilities and contributing to the nation’s efforts in safeguarding its waters. The vessel’s advanced design and capabilities position it as a vital asset in addressing evolving maritime security challenges in the region.
