As part of the Vision 2030 program by NV Airport Management, the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport is set to undergo significant improvements, including the installation of two airbridges in the near future. Director Vijay Chotkan shared these plans with Starnieuws, acknowledging the considerable challenges posed by the Covid pandemic within the aviation sector. Chotkan remains optimistic about positive developments this year, barring unforeseen external factors.

Chotkan underscores the contemporary necessity of having airbridges, emphasizing that they are no longer a luxury but a requirement for enhanced service quality. He cites the rainy season as a specific scenario where an airbridge proves invaluable, swiftly addressing inconveniences for passengers during adverse weather conditions.

Additionally, Chotkan reveals plans for the construction of a new terminal, signifying an expansion of the airport infrastructure. Responding to concerns from indigenous communities in the proximity, Chotkan clarifies that the airport obtained a government lease for over 900 hectares of land in 2013. He asserts that all legal procedures were meticulously followed, ensuring a valid basis for these developments.

Chotkan further explains that the previous government had a clear vision for the airport, indicating a potential misunderstanding in the public discourse. He expresses confidence in the transparent resolution of these matters through government intervention, allowing all involved parties to find an amicable resolution and move forward as equals. Despite potential concerns, Chotkan maintains that the airport expansions are imperative, especially considering the ongoing developments in Suriname’s coastal region, particularly in the oil and gas industry.
