Land Conversion Controversy: Legal Expert Criticizes Potential Hidden Agenda

Legal Expert Raises Alarms Over Land Conversion Plan

The implementation of the land conversion outlined in the State Decree could have detrimental consequences for the state, warns legal expert Serena Muntslag-Essed. Besides bypassing the advice to discuss this matter in the National Assembly, there are several disadvantages to the proposed method of land conversion.

To illustrate, a citizen can buy a plot of 1000 square meters from the government for approximately US$ 650, based on a calculation of SRD 25 per square meter and a maximum allowed size of 2500 square meters. For the maximum size, one would pay US$ 1600. Despite the intention to bolster the government coffers, Muntslag-Essed argues that this amount is exceedingly low, stating her concerns to ABC Radio.

Muntslag-Essed questions whether the government is adopting a similar approach to the controversial ‘bunkopu’ series concerning land conversion. While she understands the government’s desire to assist the community, the amounts to be paid are negligible. She wonders if there might be a hidden agenda behind the entire land conversion process.

The legal expert further suggests that it might be better to work with a certain percentage of the market value, which would be more realistic. This way, the government would barely earn anything that could contribute to the state treasury.
