Minister emphasizes cooperation between Suriname and Guyana
Albert Ramdin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation, explained the progress of the planned Corantijn Bridge during a government press conference. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between Suriname and Guyana for regional development.
Ramdin stated that the bridge over the Corantijn River is part of a larger whole, namely the Initiative for the Integration of the Regional Infrastructure of South America (IIRSA). This project aims to connect the economies of South America through bridges, roads, energy, and telecommunications.
He emphasized that the bridge will bring benefits to the entire region, including an increase in trade, tourism, and investment between Suriname and Guyana. Ramdin explained that the choice of the bridge’s builder is yet to be made and that talks are ongoing with both Chinese and European companies.
President Chan Santokhi of Suriname and President Irfaan Ali of Guyana are scheduled to decide who will carry out the project soon. Ramdin emphasized that the construction of the bridge is on schedule and that an agreement is likely to be signed by the end of the year.
