Ocean of Opportunities: How Blue Wave Reshapes Surinamese Businesses

A fair opportunity for everyone is the hope of one of the graduates of the Bluewave Supplier Development Program. Twenty-five small to medium-sized businesses, including Gopex International, participated in this six-month business development program. They were trained in the requirements necessary to offer services or goods for specific sectors within the offshore oil industry.

It was not an easy journey, says Gopex director Bhiesnoe Gopal. “There is a lot of documentation involved. But we received very good guidance from Staatsolie. We are very satisfied.”

Bluewave is an American company that holds specific international qualifications for (potential) suppliers to the oil industry. The program provides companies with the necessary information and tools to meet current qualifications of the international industry through workshops, access to a platform with documents required for international qualifications and certifications, personal coaching, and support.

“As a company, we are ready for the challenges that the emerging offshore oil industry brings to agriculture.” Gopal says they have grasped the common thread to have a chance to supply for the emerging offshore oil industry. “We know what is expected of us.” Gopex has extensive experience with certifications and quality standards. The company has also completed the largest segment of the Global Gap certification process. It is also the only company currently allowed to export mangoes, as it cooperated well with the Ministry of Agriculture in the pilot project to produce pest-free mangoes. The fourth shipment has already been exported, with no issues encountered.

Participant Rajiv Hieralal of RFH Agencies notes that the Blue Wave Program has been valuable for him. The program is internationally recognized and can open doors to the international oil industry for Surinamese companies. “The one-on-one coaching sessions on finance, quality, and Health Safety Security & Environment (HSSE) appealed to me. It has provided us with valuable information to implement new systems in our company and improve existing ones.”

Janneke Tammenga, Head Planning & Control of Heavy Equipment Rental, found the sessions informative, comprehensive, and highly relevant to her company. “We hope that our Bluewave badge will bring more awareness to our services. The information about required documentation and international standards for participating in a tender is valuable knowledge, and Surinamese companies cannot operate in isolation. Bluewave helps us to make the international connection.”

The program started in July 2023 with a group of 25 entrepreneurs who met the specified criteria. The costs for the program were largely covered by Staatsolie and its offshore oil partners Chevron and ExxonMobil. Participating companies made their own contribution for participation. Next month, a new group of thirty companies will start the Blue Wave program.

Gopex already supplies products to multinationals. He says that food safety requirements are becoming increasingly stringent, and companies are investing in them. Therefore, he hopes that when the time comes, fair work will also be done with local companies that meet food safety standards. “I hope that Staatsolie will oversee the food safety control of the participating companies to ensure quality
