Promised Monthly Support for Healthcare Workers Remains Unpaid
Neglected and Forgotten: Suriname Healthcare Workers
The healthcare sector in Suriname has not yet received the SRD 4,200 in purchasing power enhancement that was provided to civil servants in December. “Healthcare is always forgotten,” says Lloyd Pool, chairman of the personnel union at the Academic Hospital Paramaribo, in an interview with Starnieuws. “We have to run around again, beg again, before we get our affairs in order. At the moment, that SRD 4,200 is not settled with us.”
“We had already communicated in writing before the end of the year. Next week, we will assess how we will deal with this situation,” notes the union leader. When asked for a response, Minister Amar Ramadhin of Public Health told Starnieuws, “We are in the preparation phase, and it should be finalized by the end of next week.” He points out that it is not a simple task because healthcare personnel are eligible for various allowances. The amount in question is over SRD 30 million. The promised commitment will be fulfilled. There is ongoing coordination between Ramadhin and his colleague from Finance & Planning for a smooth process.
After several protest actions by various unions and subsequent talks with the government, it was agreed that civil servants would receive SRD 5,000 in purchasing power: SRD 4,200 in December and SRD 800 in January. This year, a monthly purchasing power enhancement of SRD 3,500 will be provided to civil servants and their equivalents. Government retirees will receive 70%.
“It is difficult for people to beg every time to get what they are owed,” emphasizes Pool. “In reality, the government should ensure that the funds are transferred simultaneously with other public servants. But people have to hit the streets, take action, send a clear signal each time before they are heard. Then, on one hand, the public complains because it is the sick person who suffers. But yes, that entirely depends on the government in this case.”
