SDG 6: The Essence of Sustainable Water Management
World Water Day, which takes place annually on March 22, highlights the crucial role of water in our daily lives and communities. For Suriname, blessed with abundant water resources, water is not only a necessity of life, but also a source of prosperity. As the Association of Surinamese Business and Industry, we reflect on the essence of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which focuses on ensuring access to water and sanitation for all, and promoting sustainable water management.
Water management in Suriname is vital for daily use, economic development, ecological conservation, and social stability. In a world facing increasing climate change and water-related tensions, it is crucial to embrace the principles of SDG 6 for a sustainable future of our water resources.
Integrated water management, as defined by the government, is vital to ensure a sustainable supply of water, maintain water quality and stimulate economic development. However, in a rapidly changing world, where population growth, economic development, and climate change are affecting the dynamics of our water resources, it is necessary to take precautions and continually evaluate and adapt our approach to water management.
The key messages for World Water Day 2024 underscore the need for cooperation on water to prevent conflict, promote prosperity, and maintain peace. Water serves not only as a source of life, but also as an instrument for peace and stability. Ensuring safe drinking water and sanitation is a fundamental human right that is the basis for a dignified life and stable societies. The statistics are worrying: more than 2.2 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water and millions live with severe water scarcity. Water-related disasters continue to dominate the list of natural disasters and have devastating effects on communities around the world.
But in these challenges there are also opportunities for change. By working together at the local, national and international levels, we can embrace the principles of SDG 6 and find sustainable solutions to our water challenges. Transnational water resources, such as those in Suriname, require cross-border cooperation and coordination to be effectively managed and protected.
As the Association of Surinamese Business and Industry, we call for a renewed commitment to the principles of SDG 6. Let’s work together, innovate and invest in sustainable water management, not only for ourselves, but also for future generations. Because only by working together can we overcome the challenges of water management and secure a sustainable future for all of us.
Target 6.4 of SDG 6 aims to achieve significant improvements in water use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable freshwater sourcing and supply, in order to effectively respond to water scarcity and significantly reduce the number of people affected by it.
To contribute to this goal, here are some guidelines for businesses:
- Water should be used sparingly and waste should be avoided.
- Water consumption should be monitored.
- Rainwater can be collected and used for a variety of activities, reducing the impact on water resources and saving costs.
- Implementation of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to monitor and improve water consumption.
