Suriname struggles with modern slavery, minimal government action
Report places Suriname between Cuba and Venezuela
A recent report by the Global Slavery Index reveals that modern slavery is widespread in Suriname, with minimal government action to address it. The country is in the lowest top three in the region, along with Cuba and Venezuela, in terms of efforts to combat modern slavery.
According to the report, in 2021, approximately 5.1 million people were in situations of modern slavery in the Americas. Suriname faces the challenge of addressing this issue, which is rooted in inequality, poverty and discrimination.
In the Americas, the United States, Canada, Argentina and Uruguay have taken the most action to address modern slavery, while Cuba, Suriname and Venezuela have taken the least action.
Modern slavery in Suriname manifests itself mainly in forced labour and marriages. However, the country is taking one of the fewest actions in the region to address these abuses. Factors such as inequality, political instability, and discrimination increase people’s vulnerability to modern slavery.
The Global Slavery Index highlights the need for countries, including Suriname, to strengthen their efforts through better legislation, increased support for victims, and action against the underlying inequality that perpetuates modern slavery.
