Suriname’s NATIN Launches Pioneering Oil & Gas Training Program
Thirty Students Embark on an 18-Month Journey to Develop Expertise for Suriname’s Growing Offshore Industry
The oil and gas training program at the Natural Technical Institute Suriname (NATIN) was ceremonially launched today, Friday, October 28, 2022. A group of thirty students is embarking on this eighteen-month program as the first cohort.
The ‘Oil & Gas Head Program’ at NATIN, officially titled the oil and gas training, was established through a collaboration involving Staatsolie, the Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture (OW&C), NATIN, Surinamese businesses, and international oil companies operating in Suriname. President Chandrikapersad Santokhi officially inaugurated the ‘Oil & Gas Head Program’ today. The head of state and Staatsolie’s CEO, Annand Jagesar, emphasized the importance of the education for the country and its citizens to maximize the benefits from the development of the Surinamese offshore oil and gas industry.
Thirty students will commence the training on October 31. The group consists of graduates from NATIN’s mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and process technology disciplines who were selected through a transparent process. The program focuses specifically on developing the knowledge and skills required for work in the oil and gas industry and related sectors.
The Oil & Gas Head Program spans one and a half years and is divided into three phases of six months each. The first phase elevates the participants’ professional knowledge to international standards. The second phase covers specific oil and gas subjects. The program concludes with a practical internship.
The head program is part of the NATIN Upgrade Project, initiated by Staatsolie in 2021 with a focus on local content development. Together with other stakeholders, efforts were made to establish an oil and gas stream at NATIN. Staatsolie and international oil companies in Suriname also acquired equipment to modernize practical lessons.
The intention is to integrate this head program into the regular four-year NATIN program after approximately three years. The upgrade project will enhance infrastructure and organization to better meet the needs of the business sector. Ultimately, NATIN is expected to evolve into an institute of excellent quality for vocational education in Suriname and the region.
Local content refers to the extent to which Surinamese companies and citizens participate in the economic activities arising from offshore discoveries. This includes the supply of local goods and services and the employment of Surinamese individuals. Staatsolie is confident that the head program and, in a few years, the Oil & Gas stream at NATIN will increase the number of Surinamese individuals and businesses capable of providing products and services to the offshore oil and gas industry.
