Suriname’s Strategic Advancements Toward Sustainable Development Goals
President Santokhi Receives Update on Suriname’s Progress in SDG Implementation
Suriname is making significant progress in executing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN). This was revealed during a presentation by the Directorate of International Cooperation (IS) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation (BIBIS) at the Office of the President. On Friday, March 10, 2023, President Chandrikapersad Santokhi received an update on the implementation of the SDGs in Suriname.
The presentation was delivered by Elisabeth Bradley, Deputy Director of IS. The BIBIS Directorate is responsible for reporting on the SDGs to the UN and for coordinating the nationwide implementation of the SDGs. Suriname has the SDG National Commission and the SDG Platform for this purpose. In 2022, Suriname reported to the UN for the first time on the goals through the presentation of the Voluntary National Review (VNR). Since the SDGs are established by the UN, member states are obligated to report every four years, explained Deputy Director Bradley. In the initial report, four goals were addressed: SDG 4 Quality Education; SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth; SDG 13 Climate Action; and SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals.
Additionally, reporting was conducted on three projects for which Suriname, as the only Caricom member state, qualified for funding from the SDG Fund. These projects include the Roadmap for a Sustainable Financial System for Suriname, the pineapple project, and the strengthening of Tribal and Indigenous peoples. Deputy Director Bradley indicated that the first project is nearly completed. The second project was launched by the president in September 2022, establishing a value chain for pineapple production. “It has just begun. The third project is yet to be launched,” said the BIBIS official, emphasizing the importance of providing the head of state with an overview of Suriname’s current position regarding the SDGs.
This marks the first time that President Santokhi has been formally informed about the status of the SDGs. The Surinamese head of state has consistently highlighted the importance of the SDGs and their implementation in domestic and international activities. Following the presentation, President Santokhi requested the Directorate to provide a more comprehensive presentation for the Council of Ministers by the end of this month. This ensures that the ministers at the highest level are informed and can commit to incorporating the information into their policies.
