IDB Allocates US$ 340 Million for Suriname’s Development

Anton Edmunds, the Caribbean general manager at the International Development Bank (IDB), recently met with the Minister of Finance and Planning, Stanley Raghoebarsing. Edmunds oversees and contributes to the IDB’s strategy and policies for six Caribbean member countries. The focus of the discussions, as announced by the Ministry through the Communication Service of Suriname on Sunday, was on the future collaboration between Suriname and the international bank.

For the upcoming partnership, both parties agreed to concentrate on projects related to fiscal policy, education, infrastructure, agriculture, public health, environment, and culture. Approximately US$ 340 million will be made available for these sectors over the next five years. Additionally, Suriname will receive grants in the form of projects and technical assistance from the IDB. The meeting, held on Tuesday, also included discussions on the current socio-economic situation, collaboration with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and IDB support.

The general manager expressed optimism about the developments and emphasized that the bank will continue to support Suriname as needed. The Minister sought attention for good governance and the strengthening of Suriname’s core institutions, alongside the projects in various priority sectors.

The Minister of Finance and Planning serves as the central point of contact for Suriname at the IDB. The six member countries, in addition to Suriname, include Barbados, Bahamas, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. Coordination with these member countries is therefore essential.
