President Santokhi Urges Surinamese Diaspora to Take Action for National Development

“Do not sit on the sidelines any longer; take action and get involved.” This was the call from President Chandrikapersad Santokhi to the Surinamese diaspora community on Monday, September 6, 2021, during a speech at the Opera Den Haag in the Netherlands. The head of state was in the country for a working visit to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with a focus on emphasizing the diaspora’s involvement in Suriname’s development.

President Santokhi pointed out that in this phase, namely the second year of the government’s policy, the diaspora’s contribution is more crucial than ever. He stated that the diaspora community has indeed been involved in resolving the financial crisis facing Suriname. For example, the Jethu brothers have been engaged in negotiations with the bondholders of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The head of state urged the diaspora to indicate how they wish to contribute, saying, “You will have to make good decisions for yourselves and make good agreements.” President Santokhi emphasized that especially in times when the crisis affects society, the Surinamese diaspora in the Netherlands will also feel the pressure. He stressed that Surinamese society needs more support and knows that the diaspora consistently provides necessary assistance in times of need.

According to the head of state, Suriname is on the eve of significant industrial developments in the oil and gas sector. Suriname has enacted good laws and entered into favorable contracts with oil companies. In developing this sector, preference will be given to local content, namely local service providers or Surinamese companies. President Santokhi reiterated that the country will be developed with one million Surinamese, including the local population and the diaspora. Surinamese companies in the Netherlands will also be given preference in the development of oil and gas. In this context, he called on the diaspora not to sit on the sidelines any longer, to take action, and to get involved. “Our government is one for the next generation; we need your involvement. Take it up; it must be different after today. You should not only say that you are available but also make decisions about what you want to do.”

As a message to political The Hague, the president stated that Suriname aims for an intensive, sustainable, and comprehensive collaboration, as demonstrated by the Dutch government’s support for healthcare in the past period. President Santokhi said, “That is what we want with the collaboration, that is what we mean when we say that the collaboration is fully restored.” There must be a mature relationship, unburdened by emotion, and business conducted in the interest of both countries. He emphasized that there is a mature approach to working in all sectors with the use of expertise from the Netherlands and the diaspora community. The Surinamese government will fulfill all its promises, but within the planned timeframe for execution. As head of state, guidance is provided alongside the government. Not everything goes flawlessly, but there is also evaluation.

In the policy towards the Netherlands, the intention is to move towards a new program of cooperation and agreements on trade and investment, as well as the optimal involvement of the diaspora community. In attracting investors, the Netherlands will be used as a facilitating country to intervene for Suriname wherever possible.
