Suriname Signs Production Sharing Contracts for Offshore Blocks 6 and 8

On May 8, 2023, Suriname’s state oil company Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V., TotalEnergies Suriname, and QatarEnergy signed production sharing contracts for offshore blocks 6 and 8. The signing of the contracts followed the completion of a Shallow Offshore Bid Round in 2021, during which Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) were signed with Chevron for blocks 5 and 7, with Shell participating in block 5. These blocks are already under exploration.

According to Staatsolie, TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy have been granted exploration, development, and production rights by entering the PSCs. Staatsolie will also participate in the project through its subsidiary Paradise Oil Company (POC), with a forty percent stake. The Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) has confirmed this participation, and the conditions have been specified. TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy will cover the costs in the exploration phase, which is expected to last six years. As per the PSC, the first exploration well is planned to be drilled in the third or fourth year. Meanwhile, Staatsolie has ensured the collection of new 3D seismic data in these blocks to facilitate the interpretation of the subsurface. By participating in the PSC from the beginning, Staatsolie will actively contribute to data collection and analysis. The PSC will remain valid for thirty years.

The PSC was signed by Staatsolie’s Managing Director Annand Jagesar, Philippe Blanchard from TotalEnergies, and Ali Al Mana from QatarEnergy. The JOA was signed by the representatives of TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy, and the director of POC, Rekha Bissumbhar. Blocks 6 and 8 are located in the west of the Shallow Offshore (SHO) area, south of recent deep water discoveries in Block 58 and north of the onshore producing fields.
