Suriname Tourism Month 2023: Celebrating Travel and Green Investments

The Directorate of Culture of the Ministry of Transport, Communication, and Tourism (TCT) has launched the Tourism Month Suriname 2023. This period runs from September 1st to September 30th, aligning with World Tourism Day on September 27th. The kick-off event took place on Friday, September 1st, at the Lalla Rookh building, with the presence of TCT Minister Albert Jubithana, Tourism Director Rabin Boeddha, and Commewijne District Commissioner Mohamedsafiek Radjab. Various tourism-related activities will continue until the 27th of the month.

During the kick-off event, a panel discussion provided the audience with valuable information about what Suriname has to offer in terms of tourism and the opportunities within this sector. Attendees also had the opportunity to engage in debates on topics related to this year’s theme, “Tourism & Green Investment.” The panel included individuals such as Dinesh Ramlal (board member of the Suriname Tourism Foundation), Sirano Zaalman (CEO of Access Suriname Travel), and fashion designer Zoรซ Heyns. Participants included key figures from the tourism sector, including owners of recreational facilities and restaurants.

The evening exceeded expectations, with overwhelming contributions from both the private and public sectors. “The goal was to raise awareness about tourism in Suriname. This is a step toward uniting the tourism sector. We have come together to explore how we can better promote Suriname, increase earnings in the tourism sector, and enhance collaboration,” stated Ruben Forster, Tourism Coordinator for Nickerie. He emphasized the importance of creating awareness about tourism, particularly regarding what Suriname has to offer, including the districts of Nickerie and Saramacca.

Our current objective is for all districts to play a role in defining tourism, allowing society to become more acquainted with it. We have already begun to showcase the activities of different districts on the website www.suriname.travel. You can view the activities for each district there,” explained the coordinator. In honor of World Tourism Day, Jo-ann Misiekaba, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Tourism, announced a grand Surinamese festival that will involve various cultures, districts, and businesses. One of the highlights of this event will be a Kids Area where children will have the opportunity to creatively learn about tourism.
