Bedrijfsomschrijving

In an era in which Suriname was still part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the only bank operating in our country was completely in foreign hands. The O.R.G Vervuurts Banking Corporation, now Hakrinbank NV, was then established as a foundation by Mr. O.R.G. Vervuurt.

Activities were initiated on June 28, 1936, in a building at no. 2-6 Keizerstraat. This met an already existing need for its own national commercial bank. The Articles of Association from that time indicate a paid-up capital of SF100.-. The purpose of the foundation in those days was described as follows: "To purchase and sell, on its own account or on commission, commercial paper, banknotes, foreign currency, and precious metal, and everything connected with all the foregoing in the broadest sense."

In 1943, the foundation form was converted into a limited liability company, and the registered capital was raised to SF 250,000. Various share issues thereafter made it possible for the public to participate in the share capital of our bank, which was increased successively in 1953, 1966, and 1973. In 1952, and 1973, the bank carried out major reorganizations as a result of losses incurred on large debtors. The name of the bank was changed into Handels-, Krediet- en Industriebank N.V., and thanks to a tight credit policy, and a strong growth in equity, the organization came back stronger in the eighties and nineties.

The 100% subsidiary, the Nationale Trust en Financieringsmaatschappij [National Trust and Finance Company], occupies an important place in the development of the bank. It was founded in 1967 under the name Nationale Trustmaatschappij, and was active in the field of asset management, and investment advice. In the early 1970s, the bank transferred its lease-purchase portfolio entirely to the subsidiary, whose name was then changed into Nationale Trust en Financieringsmaatschappij (NTFM for short). Management is in the hands of Hakrinbank N.V.

In recent years, significant investments have been made in banking technology, especially in the purchase of software, which enabled the bank as the first financial institution in Suriname to start internet banking in 2004. Hakrinbank is currently one of the leading financial institutions in Suriname with an estimated market share of approximately 25%.

The Hakrinbank share is listed on the Surinamese stock exchange, and is highly sought after.
